Stacy L. Pearsall got her start as an Air Force photographer at the age of 17. During her time in service, she traveled to over 41 countries, and attended the Military Photojournalism Program at S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. During three combat tours, she earned the Bronze Star Medal and Air Force Commendation with Valor for combat actions in Iraq. Though combat disabled and retired from military service, Pearsall continues to work worldwide as an independent photographer, and is an author, educator, military consultant, public speaker and founder of the Veterans Portrait Project. The PDN “Personal Project” award-winning series Veterans Portrait Project (VPP) began while Pearsall rehabilitated from combat injuries sustained in Iraq. Spending hours in VA waiting rooms surrounded by veterans from every generation and branch of service, Pearsall was compelled to honor and thank them in the only way she knows how, photography. She’s traveled coast to coast with the VPP and has documented roughly 6,000 veterans in over 100+ engagements. In 2015, Pearsall assisted in the establishment of the Veterans Portrait Project: UK where former British Army combat engineer and photographer, Stephen Porteous, utilizes her concept for British veterans. Between her photography, teaching and speaking engagements, Pearsall completed her first photography book, Shooter: Combat from Behind the Camera, which received worldwide praise as "A book of the highest levels in the annals of combat journalism." And her second book, A Photojournalist's Field Guide: In the Trenches with Combat Photographer Stacy Pearsall, is "A must have for every aspiring photographer out there, and even pros can pick up a few new tricks to help them become better photographers." Andrea Francolini is an photographer who is best known for his amazing photographs of yachting and sailing. His work has been in demand in both the editorial and commercial world. My-First-School is a personal project for Francolini, who has a keen interest in Pakistan's diverse society. Away from the struggles reported by the media, Pakistani people are open, friendly and family-oriented but face serious challenges in everyday life just to make ends meet. Children can be affected more than most.
With your donations, Andrea returns to northern Pakistan on a yearly basis to buy schooling equipment, like notebooks, pencils and erasers, which will benefit the children - especially girls who can find it harder to attend school. In 2013 My First School has started to help build classrooms in 3 existing schools in order to increase their capacities. Again, in 2013 a sponsorship program, which guarantees schooling for 5 years, has also been set up. At this stage 8 students are already part of the program and hopefully each year more will be added to the list.

Castro Frank is one of today’s premier contemporary street photographers. His style fuses a journalistic approach with an artistic eye to create imagery that is raw and speaks powerfully of our time. His compassion and empathy for the disenfranchised within our society has prompted him to capture them in such a way which attempts to restore the humanity and dignity of those often forgotten. Castro turns his lens toward systematic and societal issues that plague our nation i.e. homelessness, prostitution, poverty, drug abuse, and the plights of immigrants here in America. Castro’s original photographs have been collected by high profile celebrities, collectors and establishments like FOX and CBS. Written publicity includes articles in the LA Times, Huffington Post, Daily News and London’s Hunger Magazine to name a few. He has been interviewed and done live segments with Telemundo and selected as fine art photographer to kick off the Los Angeles Council District 7 public art initiative “Museo Aire Libre” with his bus bench public installation. Euan Forrester lives in Vancouver, BC and spent 9 months photographing 2 trailbuilders as they built a new mountain bike trail from scratch. He chose 20 photos and made big prints of them that he hung along the trails. He found a place that printed them with UV-resistant ink on a hard plastic material and then laminated them. It took some back-and-forth to make prints that are visible in the dim light of the forest. Forrester enjoys photographinghow people in different subcultures curiously and excitedly work hard at things like that.

When Donato DiCamillo first picked up a camera he knew he would have a hard time putting it down. It became a reason for him to step out from a dark place, which he had struggled with for some time. The dark world in which he knew so well would soon come to light after being released from prison in 2011. His inspiration derived from many great documentary photographers, such as Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Helen Levitt, Garry Winogrand, and William Klein, just to name a few, but it was Bruce Gilden and Klein's street photography that made Donato realize that he could scream through his images. His work is a constant search that's forged out of his own curiosities. They're derived from his own interpretation of people, as well as deep rooted moments in the physiological confines of his mind. "I love the amazing differences in people and how beautifully unique we all are. Good bad or indifferent; People never cease to amaze me, they often answer many of my own questions. The littlest detail, maybe in the eyes or the way someone walks can be the difference of making a photograph". Levon Biss was born in 1975 and grew up in South London. He trained initially to be an illustrator and it was not until his late teens that he picked up a camera, combining photography with his love of sports. Much of Levon’s work concentrates on shooting dynamic action portraits that show the beauty of the human form in movement. His keen understanding of the mind-set and extraordinary talents of athletes at their peak gives Levon an easy affinity with his subjects and this very much underpins the technical success of his images. His more recent work in a personal project called Microsculpture in which he captures incredibly detailed photographs of insects. Levon has also been drawn to cover the culture surrounding sport and the fan’s perspective. His project ‘One Love’ is a brilliant exploration of the global love and passion for football, it took him to 26 countries, produced a best selling book, and an exhibition viewed by 1.2 million people worldwide. Alongside his sports work, Levon has fulfilled many portrait and lifestyle commissions that showcase his great creativity and flexibility as a photographer, these include advertising shoots for O2, Deutsche Post, Mastercard and Sky and editorial work for the Observer, GQ and New York Times.

As the daughter of a wedding photographer, Yvonne Venegas’ work emerges from a reflection of portraiture charged by an analysis of social class and self-representation, particularly that of the Mexican upper middle class. She is interested in problematizing the idea of the perfect or official memory, by seeking moments of fragility or un-preparedness for the camera. Inhabited by upper middle-class social rituals, ideas of celebrity and beauty, upper class leisure, animals from a private zoo, beauty queens, or young wealthy children, she seeks to represent a fractured version of the images and situations that are traditionally understood to bring status and/or respect. Her experience growing up in the border has established in the way she views her subjects as well as the photographic practice itself, where she constantly looks for blurring lines between portraiture and documentary as well as explores the pulsating space between the perfect image and one that social studio photography could consider an error. When producing work, Venegas believes in the relationship to the world via a camera as well as via her participation in situations over long periods of time. Anthropological curiosity and empathy are both essential elements of her practice. An important outcome for her work is printed and framed for gallery presentation, as well as in book form. She has published three books Maria Elvia de Hank (2010), Inedito (2012) and Gestus (2015), all by the editorial house RM.
Since 2009 Yvonne lives and works in Mexico City with her husband and two children.

Sven Markus Victor initial career path was that as a doctor. Though he had an interest in photography, he succumbed to familiar and cultural pressure to study medicine. But at some point, he realized it could only be a career in photography that would bring him happiness and fulfillment. So, he’s made the choice to replace the stethoscope with a camera. Part of that transition has involved a recent collaboration with US-based photographer Riley Draper. They journeyed to Greece to document the fate of tens of thousands of refugees, largely from war-torn Syria. Situated in these make-shift camps in the small town of Idomeni, these men, women and children struggle to survive as Western counties debate what’s to be done with them. All this is happening in the midst of economic crisis in Greece, growing xenophobia and fears of terrorism. Victor and Draper’s work attempt to put a face a people that are often looked upon as some amorphous mass. His work, and the work of photographer and reporters like him, hope to humanize a crisis that shows no sign of diminishing or going away.

Robert Fischer is a photographer and artist who once thought his life path would be that of a psychologist. Instead, he chose to lead a creative life as a painter, sculptor and a photographer. He appreciates that the camera provides him the opportunity to closely examine his skewed perspective of life, sexuality and personality. He sees himself really a painter that takes pictures. He is often in pursuit of getting the image rather than the perfect photograph. Robert Fischer was the subject of the 1999 documentary Original Schtick, which covered his 3-months collaborating with several Australian artists and fine-art galleries. It’s a fascinating exploration of fame, self-promotion, the business and fine-art world and what can be created thru being a force of personality and maybe some questionable ethics. Robert Fischer’s new book of photography is Vignettes. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1523699256/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1523699256&linkCode=as2&tag=thecanfra-20&linkId=FDAYYVFLHFCSDT43 Resources:

Michelle Groskopf is a street photographer based in Los Angeles. She's made a practice of shooting the world around her almost daily for the past 20 years. Her work has been featured in The British Journal Of Photography, American Photo Magazine,Capricious Magazine, FLAUNT Magazine, Dazed and Confused, Vice.com, Trip Magazine, Booooooom, The Heavy Collective, Fotografia Magazine, The Magenta Foundation, It's Nice That, The Daily Mail, Conde Nast Traveler Michelle is an ongoing contributor to Vice.com Her themes revolve around tween / teen culture, girlhood and suburban ideology / iconography. "I grew up in the suburbs of Toronto surrounded by shopping carts and old ladies in headscarves. That’s all I knew for the longest time. Housing developments, strip malls, backyards and Jewish summer camp. It was comforting, one of those good childhoods and I loved it. As I got older I caught the notion of other things, other places I wanted to see. I fled straight for the city, and then kept going till I managed to get as far away I could. At some point I started taking photos. Photos of shopping carts and old ladies in headscarves, people wandering around strip malls. It didn’t matter what city I was in, I’d find them, these people that seemed so familiar to me. I’d get so close to them with my camera they would be forced to talk to me. They’d ask me why and I would tell them that I thought they were beautiful."

Mick Victor, in his career as a creative director, helps bridge the gap that sometimes exists between a business and a creative mentality. He’s made it his job to find ways for creatives to collaborate with businesses who are accustomed to quantifying work in terms of spreadsheets and cost assessments. He’s in many respects a cultural translator.
But Mick Victor is also an accomplished photographer who makes the streets and not an office his studio. But his imagery in not typical street photography. Instead his images from his Art Unexpected Series are abstractions of marking and paintings that are an everyday part of our modern urban world. These are not just photographs of graffiti. Instead, the are photographs that are the accumulation of graffiti, tagging and painting over these elements resulting in images that many would easily mistake for abstract paintings.

Photographers want to create beauty. It’s the impetus that inspires many to pick up a camera and bring it to their eye. Yet, creating a pleasing composition is not the only thing that drives many a photographer to use a camera. Some hope to effect change. There are countless documentary photographers and photojournalists who have been inspired to do more with a camera than produce a pretty picture. However, you don’t have to be either to help bring about change.
Shannon Johnstone is a photographer who has been using her camera to change the lives of dogs at a local animal shelter. These are dogs, who were at risk of being euthanized. Her project and book Landfill Dogs has provided an opportunity to not only save the lives of hundreds of animals, but also create greater awareness of the importance of spaying and neutering pets.
As mentioned in the interview, adoption and rescues are not the solution to this problem. We can’t expect animals to change their behavior for our benefit. It’s our duty and responsibility as pet owners to spay and neuter animals in our care. Otherwise animals such as the ones beautifully captured in in Shannon’s photographs will continue to be destroyed.
You can find out more about spaying and neutering your pets as well as locations near you where you might adopt and find a home for a cat or dog by visiting ASPCA.org.

Bruce Smith is a master fine-art nude, high-fashion and glamour photographer as well as a long-time friend of the show. For decades, he has produced amazing work for commercial and editorial clients from all over the world including some of the most popular and recognized fashion brands in bridal wear and swimwear. Inspired by the phrase, a picture is worth a thousands words, Bruce went through his archive of images to produce a new book 130K, a collection of 130 of his best and most iconic photographs. The books is more than just a retrospective of his work. He saw it as a personal exploration of his own creative life, to assess not just the quality of the work, but to see what all the sacrifices both professional and personal had resulted in. His work on the book provided us an opportunity to talk about not only the editing process, but also examine how a photographer, especially a professional photographer of so many years, assesses his work and his career and his life. Bruce Smith has recently moved to France from England, where he continues to work for his clients, as well as teach a new generation of fashion and beauty photographers through his hands-on workshops.
