Hunter Barnes is a documentary photographer whose work captures aspects of culture and communities ignored by the mainstream and often misrepresented in the modern American narrative.

Hunter trained in photochemistry and traditional photographic techniques. At a young age, he began a nomadic life on the road. In his early twenties, Hunter self-published his first book, Redneck Roundup, documenting the dying communities of the Old West. Other projects followed: four years spent with the Nez Perce tribe; months with a serpent-handling congregation in the Appalachian mountains; bikers, lowriders, and street gangs; inmates in California State Prison. Intense, true pockets, and subcultures of America.

The process is an integral part of Hunter’s work. He shoots exclusively on film—the pace of analog in harmony with his approach. Fundamental to Hunter’s work is the journey, the people, the place. Then committing them to film before they are greatly changed or gone forever.

His new book is titled: The People

Duane Michals (b. 1932, McKeesport, PA) is one of the great photographic innovators of the last century, widely known for his work with series, multiple exposures, and text.

Michals first made significant, creative strides in the field of photography during the 1960s. In an era heavily influenced by photojournalism, Michals manipulated the medium to communicate narratives. The sequences, for which he is widely known, appropriate cinema’s frame-by-frame format. Michals has also incorporated text as a key component in his works. Rather than serving a didactic or explanatory function, his handwritten text adds another dimension to the images’ meaning and gives voice to Michals’s singular musings, which are poetic, tragic, and humorous, often all at once.

Since opening his studio in New York City in 1983, photographer Stephen Wilkes has built an unprecedented body of work and a reputation as one of America’s most iconic photographers, widely recognized for his fine art, editorial and commercial work.

Wilkes’ early career interpretations of Mainland China, California’s Highway One, and impressionistic “Burned Objects” set the tone for a series of career-defining projects that catapulted him to the top of the photographic landscape.

Day to Night, Wilkes’ most defining project, began in 2009. These epic cityscapes and landscapes, portrayed from a fixed camera angle for up to 30 hours capture fleeting moments of humanity as light passes in front of his lens over the course of a full day. Blending these images into a single photograph takes months to complete. Day to Night has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning as well as dozens of other prominent media outlets and, with a grant from the National Geographic Society, was recently extended to include America’s National Parks in celebration of their centennial anniversary and Bird Migration for the 2018 Year of the Bird. Day to Night: In the Field with Stephen Wilkes was exhibited at The National Geographic Museum in February 2018.

Colin Finlay is one of the foremost documentary photographers and filmmakers in the world. For almost twenty-five years, Finlay has chronicled the human condition with compassion, empathy, and dignity. He has covered war and conflict, disappearing traditions, the environment in both its glory and its devastation, genocide, famine, religious pilgrimage, and global cultures. In pursuit of his passion, he has circled the globe twenty-seven times, in search of that one photo that will be a testament to the depth of human will and compassion, of hope and of an informed collective consciousness.

In addition to book and photography projects, Finlay is an accomplished musician, with his compositions accompanying his latest photography exhibition, Of Consequence. Finlay has participated in a number of TEDx events nationally and is invited to speak regularly at a variety of prestigious events and institutions, such as the Annenberg, LACMA, ADOBE, Goldman Environmental Awards, and the Ford Foundation.

Finlay is passionate about humanitarian efforts and even co-founded the non-profit organization Proof: Media for Social Justice to help address issues faced by populations in post-conflict societies, and to encourage social change through photography.

This week, we’re doing something a little different. This is a conversation that was inspired by rewatching a class presentation recorded in 1997 with the legendary street photographer, Garry Winogrand. Inspired by a particular statement made by the photographer, I invited Sean Tucker to discuss our reaction to his Winogrand’s talk.

Sean Tucker is a photographer, YouTuber, Instagrammer, and a former priest. But in all these roles, he has always imagined himself a storyteller. His journey from the priesthood to a professional photographer has provided him a unique career path but also a wealth of experiences that he openly shares on his popular YouTube channel.

His photographic work has allowed him to tell the stories of individuals, NGO’s and big multinational corporations, across more than 20 countries. While his philosophical musing about life, photography and creativity have and continue to inspire creatives all over the world.

Joel Meyerowitz (born in New York, 1938) is an award-winning photographer whose work has appeared in over 350 exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world. He is a two-time Guggenheim Fellow, a recipient of both the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities awards, and a recipient of the Deutscher Fotobuchpreis, and has published over thirty books, including the Aperture titles Legacy (2009), Cape Light (2015), and Seeing Things (2016).

His most recent work is called Provincetown. The town has long been defined by outsiders. A safe haven for the queer community and a getaway for artists, it is a place defined by openness and tolerance.

Throughout the late 1970s and early ’80s Joel Meyerowitz spent his summers there, roaming the seaside with an 8-by-10 camera, making exquisite, sharply observed portraits of families, couples, children, artists, and other denizens of the progressive community. A cast of characters appear and reappear from season to season against a picturesque backdrop of sea, sand, and sun. Provincetown collects one hundred portraits, most never before published, bringing viewers into an idyllic world of self-styled individualism.
