Endia Beal is a North Carolina based artist, who is internationally known for her photographic narratives and video testimonies that examine the personal, yet contemporary stories of marginalized communities and individuals. Beal currently serves as the Director of Diggs Gallery at Winston-Salem State University and Associate Professor of Art.

As a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2008, Beal earned a dual bachelor’s degree in Art History and Studio Art. During her undergraduate studies, she attended the Studio Art Center International in Florence, Italy focusing on High Renaissance Art History and the romance languages of the Italian culture. Following graduation, Beal was one of four women nationally selected to participate in ArtTable, a program designed to promote women in the visual arts. Representing the Washington, D.C. district, she assisted in the curation of the Andy Warhol Exhibit at the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery of George Washington University. Beal used this experience as a platform to advocate for minority opportunities within the arts. She was instrumental in creating marketing campaigns that redefined the way minority communities interact with art. Her work experience includes the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, the Connecticut Center for Arts and Technology, and The New York Times Magazine.

In 2013, Beal graduated from Yale School of Art, with a Master of Fine Arts in Photography. While attending Yale, she created a body of work that explores the relationship of minority women within the corporate space. Her work was fully developed during the artist-in-residence program at the Center for Photography at Woodstock. Beal aligns herself with artists such as Carrie Mae Weems and Lorna Simpson, who use stories as the vehicle to question conformity and gender norms.

Jim Herrington is a photographer whose portraits of celebrities including Benny Goodman, Willie Nelson, The Rolling Stones, Cormac McCarthy, Morgan Freeman and Dolly Parton have appeared on the pages of Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Esquire, GQ, Outside and Men’s Journal as well as on scores of album covers for more than three decades. He has photographed international ad campaigns for clients such as Thule, Trek Bikes, Gibson Guitars, and Wild Turkey Bourbon.

For nearly two decades, he worked on a portrait series of early-to-mid 20th Century mountain climbing legends. The result is the recently published 'The Climbers', a collection of sixty black-and-white photographs that document these rugged individualists, including the likes of Royal Robbins, Reinhold Messner, Yvon Chouinard, and Riccardo Cassin. Between the 1920s and 1970s, these determined men and women used primitive gear along with their considerable wits, talent, and fortitude to tackle unscaled peaks around the world. In these images, Herrington has captured their humanity, obsession, intellect, and frailty.

The book, published in October 2017, won the Grand Prize at the 2017 Banff Book Awards, as well as the Mountaineering History Award. www.theclimbersbook.com

Herrington co-produced the Jerry Lee Lewis episode for the HBO/Cinemax series ‘Mike Judge Presents: Tales from the Tour Bus’ that premiered September 2017.

Herrington’s photography has been exhibited in solo and group gallery shows in New York City, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Nashville, Milwaukee, and Charlotte, and is in numerous private collections.

Gary Nicholls was born in Essex, England. He studied Design Technology and Technical drawing to B.ed level, and during that time he also took art classes where he learned that he had a natural eye, and could “see” something finished.

Two turning points, since buying his first DSLR  led him to the Imaginarium concept. The first was when he subscribed to Adobe Photoshop, realizing that his drawing skills would be of huge benefit.

The second turning point came in September 2012 when he bought tickets for the Lincoln Steampunk Festival at the Asylum. It was the moment when he knew he had found his niche.

The idea of “The Imaginarium” was born from that meeting. Not since Hogarth with Rakes Progress has a story been told in fine art images. What started as a 20-image short story has grown into a 450 image trilogy with 150 genuine Steampunks involved, taking storytelling to a whole new level.

Matt Payne is a landscape photographer who grew up in Colorado Springs, Colorado and was lucky to have parents that instilled him with a healthy appreciation for the outdoors. He grew up quite poor, which was actually quite a blessing in disguise, as his family vacations involved going camping in the Colorado mountains almost every weekend during the summer. His father took him along on his pursuit to climb Colorado's highest 100 mountains back in the 1980's and helped him climb his first 14,000 ft. mountain at the age of 6.

Whenever he can, he heads out into the amazing world to take photos. He feels most connected to the wilderness and the outdoors; however, he also enjoys exploring urban environments for unique perspectives and powerful imagery. He is also the creator of the podcast, "F-Stop, Collaborate, and Listen”, a space to have meaningful conversations with other landscape photographers all over the world.

Born in Cambridge, England, Jacqueline Walters is a fine art photographer based in San Francisco. Through a passion for expatriate literature from Paris of the 20s and 30s, she discovered the world of photography. One passion turned into another as her world of words became a world of images. Thus, began her journey from the textual to the visual, from one form of storytelling to another. In the process, she discovered that photography is about finding the story she had to tell. Above all, it is about seeing, being patient, and being forever humbled.

Ira Block is an internationally renowned photographer, teacher, and lecturer who has produced over 30 stories for the National Geographic Magazine. He has led National Geographic Photo Workshops, Expeditions, and private workshops to Mongolia, Bhutan, Cuba, and Tibet where students learn about culture and photographic vision. His documentary photography work is balanced by a stable of commercial clients for whom he shoots portraits and corporate branding.

Ira can best be described as a cultural documentary photographer. He uses his cameras and lights to document people around the world, recording the change in traditions and practices. The changes are most often gradual, which is why he returns to a location time after time after time, helping us see these changes and appreciate them through his eyes—and through social media.

Over 300,000 people currently follow him on Instagram. For Ira, this has become the new media for documentary photography.

He has had photographic exhibitions around the world. As a Sony Artisan of Imagery, Ira is often called upon to comment and give critical feedback on the Sony products he uses to create his work. His latest book Cuba Loves Baseball: A Photographic Journey documents the culture of Cuba through its love for baseball and sports.

Fadi BouKaram was born and raised in Beirut and never wanted to be a photographer. Growing up in a war-torn country, photos often were -- and still are -- the only remnant of the many people who don't exist anymore. These people unwittingly became mythical, for each photo of them hid fantastical stories that only the adults lived and told; it was magic.

A simple Google search on his hometown of Lebanon resulted in him discovering a large number of towns in the United States that shared the same name. His curiosity about those towns led him on a multiple-year adventure on the road to explore, discover and photograph those communities and the people that make those places their home. Along the way, he has discovered much about the changing face of small-town America.

Nydia Blas is a visual artist living in Ithaca, New York with her two children. She holds a B.S. from Ithaca College and received her M.F.A. from Syracuse University in the School of Visual and Performing Arts. She currently serves as the Executive Director of Southside Community Center, a historically Black community center in downtown Ithaca. She uses photography, collage, video, and books to address matters of sexuality, intimacy, and her lived experience as a girl, woman, and mother. The result is an environment that is dependent upon the belief that in order to maintain resiliency, a magical outlook is necessary.

She is a recipient of the 2018 Light Work Grant, and her new series Whatever You Like is currently on exhibition at Over The Influence gallery in Los Angeles. Her work is featured in the book Mfon: A Journal of Women Photographers of the African Diaspora. Olaf Sztaba first picked up a camera thirty-five years ago. Since then his passion for “seeing” has become a lifetime journey with photography.

This journey started in communist Poland where Olaf spent his childhood. The dreary, utilitarian era helped him to sharpen his senses in search of things uncommon and simple. In 1996 Olaf called Canada his new home.

The grand vistas of British Columbia further opened his visual horizons and need for seeing. A dramatic illness nearly took his life but gave Olaf the courage to pursue photography full time. It also provoked a different way of seeing the world.

Olaf has been an early adopter of the Fuji X-series line of cameras and lenses, with the X100/S/T rangefinder-style remaining his favourite creative tool. In 2011, Olaf started a popular blog, http://www.olafphotoblog.com, which discusses creativity, inspiration, travel and fine art photography plus the X-series cameras and lenses. He’s also a founder of Simplicity-In-Seeing– a subscription-based educational and mentoring platform dedicated to the art of seeing.

Today, Olaf spends most of his time writing and photographing in the field, minimizing the time spent in front of a computer. He is a sought-after speaker and educator, currently working on a series of books about creativity and his personal approach to image creation.

Olaf lives in Coquitlam, British Columbia with his wife Kasia, his son Olivier and their furry four-legged companion, Bailey.

Joel Meyerowitz was born in the Bronx in 1938 into a neighborhood that offered daily lessons in the divine comedy and tragedies of human behavior. He believes it was that basic “street” education that nurtured his delight in human observation, a perception that is at the heart of his photography.

After studying art, art history, and medical illustration at Ohio State University, he worked as an art director in advertising in the early 60’s. In 1962, Robert Frank made photographs for a booklet Meyerowitz designed, and it was while watching Frank work that he discovered that photographs could be made while both the photographer and the subject were in motion! The power of this observation made Meyerowitz quit his job immediately, borrow a camera, and go out onto the streets of New York. He has been on the streets ever since.

Meyerowitz began by using color film, not knowing any better, nor aware that photographers of that era believed that black and white was the ‘art’ of photography. During his first days on the street, he met a young graphic designer, Tony Ray-Jones, who, like Meyerowitz, began using color as the most natural means of making photographs. Later that year Meyerowitz met, and became friends with, Garry Winogrand, and together they walked and worked Fifth Avenue daily for nearly five years.

The work of Meyerowitz, who is a Guggenheim fellow and a recipient of both the NEA and NEH awards, has appeared in over 350 exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world. He was the only photographer to gain unrestricted access to Ground Zero after 9/11, which produced a body of work that led Meyerowitz to represent the United States at the Venice Biennale for Architecture in 2002. His work is in the collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Art Institute of Chicago, and many others worldwide.

Meyerowitz lives and works in New York and in Italy.

John Keatley often self-characterizes his work as a reflection of himself, rather than the individual he is photographing. In recent years, his journey of self-discovery has brought clarity to emotions that have always been present yet were previously unknown. Anxiety. Fear. Isolation. Not Being In Control. Keatley capitalizes on the correlation between these emotions and humor. It is a fine line, sitting in the pain of the emotion and understanding that pain can also be humorous. Yet John beautifully executes this dichotomy in his work, as the viewer is invited to stay a moment longer and ponder the unexpected.

Jeffery Saddoris is endlessly curious – about people, about creativity, about line and shape and color – and his personal and professional pursuits are driven by learning, discovering, imagining, listening, celebrating, and making.

Years of practicing and teaching photography led Jeffery to realize that few people were talking about the why of creativity – the motivations and inspirations that fuel the work of photographers and other visual artists. He began the website Faded & Blurred as a way to showcase photographers’ creative inspiration through editorials, in-depth Spotlights, and a podcast series of one-on-one interviews. One of Jeffery’s interviews was with New York-based portrait photographer Bill Wadman, who later invited Jeffery to become the co-host for his new weekly podcast On Taking Pictures.

Jeffery often refers to himself as a “serial conversationalist” and podcasting has become an increasingly important platform for his lifelong interest in learning, exploring, communicating, and sharing about art and artists – between more than 5 years talking about photography on On Taking Pictures, hosting the 12-episode Craft & Vision Podcast, and Process Driven, his ongoing podcast of long-form conversations about creativity and how the creative process manifests itself across a wide range of genres and disciplines.

Chuck Anerino is a photographer whose work revolves around his family. Practicing a style described as family documentary, Anerino uses the sensibility of a documentary photographer to capture lives of his family, particularly his young boys.

Often rendered in beautiful black and white, he pursues ordinary moments that when captured within the frame deliver beauty and insight.  Though he has also worked as a part-time wedding photographer, he has continued his nearly two-decade career in education while continuing to use photography as means to express creativity and tell intimate stories.

Lauren Welles is a freelance photographer based in NYC.  Prior to becoming a full- time photographer, she spent 16 years practicing law.  The same skills that were invaluable to her as an attorney-- the ability to problem solve, and to see something from multiple perspectives—have been indispensable to her career as a photographer.

Her photography has been exhibited in various venues including "The Fence" at Photoville, NYC & Atlanta; the Museum of the City of New York; PhotoLeiden, The Netherlands, Umbrella Arts Gallery, NYC; The Center For Fine Art Photography, Ft. Collins, CO; Arsenal Gallery, Central Park, NYC; and the HistoryMiami Museum, among others.
