Sandy Sugawara and Catiana Garcia Kilroy collaborate on a book project titled Show Me the Way Home. It is an immersive, visual journey through the incarceration camps that held 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War 2. Sugawara and Kilroy tell the story of each camp through original and archival photographs, personal stories, and government documents. It’s a frightening tale of a society that failed to protect its vulnerable. Sandy Sugawara is a Maryland-based photographer and journalist. After the death of her parents, Sandy turned her attention West, focusing on themes of family and memories through landscape. Catiana Garcia-Kilroy is a DC-based photographer and development economist. Mike Poggioli came to see photography as a serious creative outlet when he moved to Chicago in 2015 and became enamored by the beauty of the city’s architecture. He was particularly drawn to the L trains, experiencing every ride through The Loop, Chicago’s downtown center, as a complimentary architecture tour. Mike then brought his newfound love for cityscapes to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he studied clinical psychology. J. Kern (b. 1978) is an American artist whose work investigates ideas of home, ancestry, and a sense of place. His portraits focus on intimate, interdependent relationships of people, animals, and landscapes as a means of exploring how ancestry shapes identity and how myth intertwines with personal history. His camera has led him from an inquiry into his lineage in the farming communities of Scandinavia and Ireland to the examination of similar communities near his home in Minnesota. Increasingly, his attention has been captured by the next generation of young people, who may or may not be the stewards of rural communities and economies in the future. Meryl Meisler was born 1951 in the South Bronx and raised in North Massapequa, Long Island, NY. Meryl began photographing herself, family, and friends while enrolled in a photography class taught by Cavalliere Ketchum at The University of Wisconsin, Madison. In 1975, Meryl returned to New York City and studied with Lisette Model, photographing her hometown and the city around her. After working as a freelance illustrator by day, Meryl frequented and photographed the infamous New York Discos. Meisler began releasing large bodies of previously unseen work. Meryl’s first monograph, A Tale of Two Cities: Disco Era Bushwick (Bizarre, 2014), received international acclaim. The book juxtaposes her zenith of disco photos with images of the burned-out yet beautiful neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn in the 1980s. Her latest monograph, New York PARADISE LOST Bushwick Era Disco (Parallel Pictures Press 2021). Meryl lives and works in New York City and Woodstock, NY, continuing the photographic memoir she began in 1973 – a uniquely American story, sweet and sassy with a pinch of mystery. ClampArt represents her work.

Nicky Posley's journey into makeup began through a strong fascination with the transformative power of beauty, art, and fashion. A fine artist first, Nicky experimented with many visual art forms, eventually finding the medium he felt most at home with. He is both a working artist and a respected educator of his craft. He believes that makeup is an art and that art is empowerment. Whether it be slick and modern or primitive and rudimentary, art can evoke emotions deeply rooted in the human experience. Like the human experience, it is ever-changing. . . always evolving. We sit down to discuss the history of Kodak’s Shirley card and how the technology of film impacted the rendering of skin tones, especially those of people of color.

Chinatown Pretty was created by photographer Andria Lo and writer Valerie Luu, two friends who love dim sum and chasing after pretty poh pohs (grandmas). They started a blog after their personal project was featured as a story, Chinatown Sartorialist, on The Bold Italic. For the story they pitched, they shot portraits and interviewed seniors in San Francisco Chinatown whose outfits reminded the pair of their grandmothers. The experience brought them so much joy and inspiration that they wanted to continue capturing their unique style and stories.

Will Burrard-Lucas is a wildlife photographer from the UK. Whenever possible, Will prefers to get close to his wild subjects and use a wide-angle lens to capture a more intimate perspective. Initially, he achieved this by crawling up to unthreatening species. However, he also dreamt of doing this with iconic African animals such as lions and elephants. To achieve this he created a remote-control camera buggy in 2009, which he called “BeetleCam”. The buggy soon proved itself and to this day Will continues to use it to capture fresh perspectives in his work. Will has also developed sensors to detect animals and automatically trigger his cameras. Deploying these “camera traps” for weeks or months at a time has allowed him to capture rare photographs of secretive and nocturnal wildlife. Will founded Camtraptions Ltd to turn his creations for camera trap photography into products for photographers and filmmakers around the world. In 2017, Will embarked on a new project titled “Land of Giants”. The aim of this project was to document the last of Africa’s iconic elephants with tusks reaching down to the ground. In 2019, “Land of Giants” was released as a book in support of the Tsavo Trust. His latest book is The Black Leopard.

Acclaimed for her contemporary depictions, Mona Kuhn is considered a leading artist in the world of figurative discourse. Throughout a career spanning more than twenty years, the underlying theme of her work is her reflection on humanity’s longing for spiritual connection and solidarity. As she solidified her photographic style, Kuhn created a notable approach to the nude by developing friendships with her subjects, and employing a range of playful visual strategies that use natural light and minimalist settings to evoke a sublime sense of comfort between the human figure and its environment. Her work is natural, restful, and a reinterpretation of the nude in the canon of contemporary art. Kuhn was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1969, of German descent. In 1989, Kuhn moved to the US and earned her BA from The Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute. She is currently an independent scholar at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. Occasionally, Mona teaches at UCLA and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Mona Kuhn’s latest monograph is Mona Kuhn: Works.

Hunter Barnes is a documentary photographer whose work captures aspects of culture and communities ignored by the mainstream and often misrepresented in the modern American narrative. Hunter trained in photochemistry and traditional photographic techniques. At a young age, he began a nomadic life on the road. In his early twenties, Hunter self-published his first book, Redneck Roundup, documenting the dying communities of the Old West. Other projects followed: four years spent with the Nez Perce tribe; months with a serpent-handling congregation in the Appalachian mountains; bikers, lowriders, and street gangs; inmates in California State Prison. Intense, true pockets, and subcultures of America. The process is an integral part of Hunter’s work. He shoots exclusively on film—the pace of analog in harmony with his approach. Fundamental to Hunter’s work is the journey, the people, the place. Then committing them to film before they are greatly changed or gone forever. His new book is titled: The People. Duane Michals (b. 1932, McKeesport, PA) is one of the great photographic innovators of the last century, widely known for his work with series, multiple exposures, and text. Michals first made significant, creative strides in the field of photography during the 1960s. In an era heavily influenced by photojournalism, Michals manipulated the medium to communicate narratives. The sequences, for which he is widely known, appropriate cinema’s frame-by-frame format. Michals has also incorporated text as a key component in his works. Rather than serving a didactic or explanatory function, his handwritten text adds another dimension to the images’ meaning and gives voice to Michals’s singular musings, which are poetic, tragic, and humorous, often all at once.

Since opening his studio in New York City in 1983, photographer Stephen Wilkes has built an unprecedented body of work and a reputation as one of America’s most iconic photographers, widely recognized for his fine art, editorial and commercial work. Wilkes’ early career interpretations of Mainland China, California’s Highway One, and impressionistic “Burned Objects” set the tone for a series of career-defining projects that catapulted him to the top of the photographic landscape. Day to Night, Wilkes’ most defining project, began in 2009. These epic cityscapes and landscapes, portrayed from a fixed camera angle for up to 30 hours capture fleeting moments of humanity as light passes in front of his lens over the course of a full day. Blending these images into a single photograph takes months to complete. Day to Night has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning as well as dozens of other prominent media outlets and, with a grant from the National Geographic Society, was recently extended to include America’s National Parks in celebration of their centennial anniversary and Bird Migration for the 2018 Year of the Bird. Day to Night: In the Field with Stephen Wilkes was exhibited at The National Geographic Museum in February 2018.
