Michelle Guillermin is a wildlife and nature photographer who engages the viewer in both the grandeur of and the danger to wildlife.  Her use of stark, gritty black and white is intended to bridge time, to push viewers to imagine a world when wildlife was plentiful.  Her goal is to build awareness of the challenges facing our natural world through the appreciation of the few remaining creatures.

Her initial career in finances has provided her the foundation from which she has a secondary career as a photographer. Without completely leaving her financial work, she has successfully created a photographic life that has taken her around the world. Some of her work, particularly those of African elephants, is helping to create greater awareness of the plight faced by these great animals.

Levon Biss was born in 1975 and grew up in South London. He trained initially to be an illustrator and it was not until his late teens that he picked up a camera, combining photography with his love of sports.

Much of Levon’s work concentrates on shooting dynamic action portraits that show the beauty of the human form in movement. His keen understanding of the mind-set and extraordinary talents of athletes at their peak gives Levon an easy affinity with his subjects and this very much underpins the technical success of his images. His more recent work in a personal project called Microsculpture in which he captures incredibly detailed photographs of insects.

Levon has also been drawn to cover the culture surrounding sport and the fan’s perspective. His project ‘One Love’ is a brilliant exploration of the global love and passion for football, it took him to 26 countries, produced a best selling book, and an exhibition viewed by 1.2 million people worldwide.

Alongside his sports work, Levon has fulfilled many portrait and lifestyle commissions that showcase his great creativity and flexibility as a photographer, these include advertising shoots for O2, Deutsche Post, Mastercard and Sky and editorial work for the Observer, GQ and New York Times.

As the daughter of a wedding photographer, Yvonne Venegas’ work emerges from a reflection of portraiture charged by an analysis of social class and self-representation, particularly that of the Mexican upper middle class. She is interested in problematizing the idea of the perfect or official memory, by seeking moments of fragility or un-preparedness for the camera. Inhabited by upper middle-class social rituals, ideas of celebrity and beauty, upper class leisure, animals from a private zoo, beauty queens, or young wealthy children, she seeks to represent a fractured version of the images and situations that are traditionally understood to bring status and/or respect. Her experience growing up in the border has established in the way she views her subjects as well as the photographic practice itself, where she constantly looks for blurring lines between portraiture and documentary as well as explores the pulsating space between the perfect image and one that social studio photography could consider an error.

When producing work, Venegas believes in the relationship to the world via a camera as well as via her participation in situations over long periods of time. Anthropological curiosity and empathy are both essential elements of her practice. An important outcome for her work is printed and framed for gallery presentation, as well as in book form. She has published three books Maria Elvia de Hank (2010), Inedito (2012) and Gestus (2015), all by the editorial house RM.

Since 2009 Yvonne lives and works in Mexico City with her husband and two children.

Sven Markus Victor initial career path was that as a doctor. Though he had an interest in photography, he succumbed to familiar and cultural pressure to study medicine. But at some point, he realized it could only be a career in photography that would bring him happiness and fulfillment. So, he’s made the choice to replace the stethoscope with a camera.

Part of that transition has involved a recent collaboration with US-based photographer Riley Draper. They journeyed to Greece to document the fate of tens of thousands of refugees, largely from war-torn Syria. Situated in these make-shift camps in the small town of Idomeni, these men, women and children struggle to survive as Western counties debate what’s to be done with them. All this is happening in the midst of economic crisis in Greece, growing xenophobia and fears of terrorism.

Victor and Draper’s work attempt to put a face a people that are often looked upon as some amorphous mass. His work, and the work of photographer and reporters like him, hope to humanize a crisis that shows no sign of diminishing or going away.

His projects have taken him to Bhopal, India, the Semey Polygon nuclear testing site in Kazakhstan oilfields in Azerbajian, and the Canadian, Arctic. A Fulbright Fellowship enabled him to spend two years in Chernobyl, photographing and interviewing those who remain a generation after the 1986 accident. He lived in Sukachi, Ukraine a small farming village just outside of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

Rothbart recently started a new project, Fracking Pennsylvania, documenting the effects of natural gas drilling on rural communities. Previously he was a staff photographer for the University of Wisconsin and an Associated Press photographer in Central Asia. He now lives in upstate New York and photographs for magazines, newspapers and educational institutions.

Cristina Mittermeier (born Cristina Sofía Goettsch Cabello: November 26, 1966 in Mexico City, Mexico) is a photographer. She has coauthored books for popular and scientific audiences, as well as scientific papers and magazine articles. She is founder, former President, and a Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers.

Mittermeier studied photography at the Corcoran College for the Arts in Washington, D.C. (no degree). Her images focus on demonstrating the important relationship between human cultures, especially indigenous people and biodiversity. A good portion of her work centers on a tribe from the central Amazon called the Kayapo (see image on the left). The Kayapo continue to invite her back to photograph their way of life and their struggle to keep their territory and she said she "tries to bring that story out in the most dignified, compelling way"[4] she can. Mittermeier said that she’s passionate about the lives and struggles of indigenous people and the important role they play to protect biodiversity, languages, culture, and landscapes.

In 2005, Mittermeier created the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP), and in 2011 resigned from her position as the organization's President.[5] She sits on the Board of Directors of the WILD Foundation,[6] and the Chairman's Council of Conservation International(her ex-husband's organization).[7] Mittermeier also photographed, and was integral to the deliberations of, the Defying Ocean's End Conference[8] (Los Cabos, Mexico 2003), working closely with Dr. Sylvia Earle.

In 2008, she was named one of Sony's Artisans of Imagery.[9]

Robert Fischer is a photographer and artist who once thought his life path would be that of a psychologist. Instead, he chose to lead a creative life as a painter, sculptor and a photographer.

He appreciates that the camera provides him the opportunity to closely examine his skewed perspective of life, sexuality and personality. He sees himself really a painter that takes pictures.  He is often in pursuit of getting the image rather than the perfect photograph.

Robert Fischer was the subject of the 1999 documentary Original Schtick, which covered his 3-months collaborating with several Australian artists and fine-art galleries. It’s a fascinating exploration of fame, self-promotion, the business and fine-art world and what can be created thru being a force of personality and maybe some questionable ethics.

Robert Fischer’s new book of photography is Vignettes.

TCF Ep. 312 - Michelle Groskopf

Michelle Groskopf is a street photographer based in Los Angeles. She's made a practice of shooting the world around her almost daily for the past 20 years. Her work has been featured in The British Journal Of Photography, American Photo Magazine,Capricious Magazine, FLAUNT Magazine, Dazed and Confused, Vice.com, Trip Magazine, Booooooom,  The Heavy Collective, Fotografia Magazine, The Magenta Foundation, It's Nice That, The Daily Mail,  Conde Nast Traveler

Michelle is an ongoing contributor to Vice.com

Her themes revolve around tween / teen culture, girlhood and suburban ideology / iconography.

"I grew up in the suburbs of Toronto surrounded by shopping carts and old ladies in headscarves. That’s all I knew for the longest time. Housing developments, strip malls, backyards and Jewish summer camp. It was comforting, one of those good childhoods and I loved it. As I got older I caught the notion of other things, other places I wanted to see. I fled straight for the city, and then kept going till I managed to get as far away I could. At some point I started taking photos. Photos of shopping carts and old ladies in headscarves, people wandering around strip malls. It didn’t matter what city I was in, I’d find them, these people that seemed so familiar to me. I’d get so close to them with my camera they would be forced to talk to me. They’d ask me why and I would tell them that I thought they were beautiful."

Mick Victor, in his career as a creative director, helps bridge the gap that sometimes exists between a business and a creative mentality. He’s made it his job to find ways for creatives to collaborate with businesses who are accustomed to quantifying work in terms of spreadsheets and cost assessments. He’s in many respects a cultural translator.

But Mick Victor is also an accomplished photographer who makes the streets and not an office his studio. But his imagery in not typical street photography. Instead his images from his Art Unexpected Series are abstractions of marking and paintings that are an everyday part of our modern urban world. These are not just photographs of graffiti. Instead, the are photographs that are the accumulation of graffiti, tagging and painting over these elements resulting in images that many would easily mistake for abstract paintings.

Photographers want to create beauty. It’s the impetus that inspires many to pick up a camera and bring it to their eye. Yet, creating a pleasing composition is not the only thing that drives many a photographer to use a camera. Some hope to effect change. There are countless documentary photographers and photojournalists who have been inspired to do more with a camera than produce a pretty picture. However, you don’t have to be either to help bring about change.

Shannon Johnstone is a photographer who has been using her camera to change the lives of dogs at a local animal shelter. These are dogs, who were at risk of being euthanized. Her project and book Landfill Dogs has provided an opportunity to not only save the lives of hundreds of animals, but also create greater awareness of the importance of spaying and neutering pets.

As mentioned in the interview, adoption and rescues are not the solution to this problem. We can’t expect animals to change their behavior for our benefit. It’s our duty and responsibility as pet owners to spay and neuter animals in our care. Otherwise animals such as the ones beautifully captured in in Shannon’s photographs will continue to be destroyed.

You can find out more about spaying and neutering your pets as well as locations near you where you might adopt and find a home for a cat or dog by visiting ASPCA.org.

Bruce Smith is a master fine-art nude, high-fashion and glamour photographer as well as a long-time friend of the show. For decades, he has produced amazing work for commercial and editorial clients from all over the world including some of the most popular and recognized fashion brands in bridal wear and swimwear.

Inspired by the phrase, a picture is worth a thousands words, Bruce went through his archive of images to produce a new book 130K, a collection of 130 of his best and most iconic photographs.

The books is more than just a retrospective of his work. He saw it as a personal exploration of his own creative life, to assess not just the quality of the work, but to see what all the sacrifices both professional and personal had resulted in.

His work on the book provided us an opportunity to talk about not only the editing process, but also examine how a photographer, especially a professional photographer of so many years, assesses his work and his career and his life.

Bruce Smith has recently moved to France from England, where he continues to work for his clients, as well as teach a new generation of fashion and beauty photographers through his hands-on workshops.

Photographer Sarah Takako Skinner created the HOPE IS PROJECT as a way to understand the nature of Hope and inspire others to find it.

Takako has traveled the world, interviewing subjects and handing them a Holga camera and a roll of film, providing them with one simple instruction: photograph hope.

With the collaboration of a team of influencers, the project seeks to place cameras in the hands of many people, challenging them to share their stories and capture images embodying hope. This will capture the continuation of Takako's journey, and can become one of the largest and most influential art exhibits in history -- true partnership between art and purpose.

It is a project of transformation and impact focused on the understanding, discovery, and harnessing of the power of hope through the vehicle of an inspiring photographic process. The mission is to engage the power of photography along with a process of exploration, storytelling, and self-reflection to widely inspire hope, effect lasting and meaningful change, and contribute to growth and development in fields of social work, medicine, mental health, tolerance, rehabilitation and recovery.

Juan Jose Reyes is an avid street photographer who helped to found the Miami Street Photography Festival held every year in December.

The MSPF© is an international photography festival  showcasing the best of contemporary Street Photography viewed through the eyes of emerging photographers in this genre.  The goal of the Festival is to establish a global platform for learning through exhibitions, workshops, lectures and other events.

This Festival is a collaborative effort to advance the work of photographers who pay attention to everyday life in order to capture the world around us.

Street photographers use their keen sense of observation to capture compelling candid moments in the everyday life of strangers, whether it be a gesture, facial expression, action or scene. Their method is often likened to a mirror held up to society...it reflects reality. There is no set-up involved, no manipulation of the scene and very little or no post-processing of the image. This realism has provided an accurate and insightful record of street culture throughout the world. With images portraying everything from the ugly, gritty side of life to more humorous situations, they are moments that unless captured, might otherwise go unnoticed.

At the heart of street photography is the 'decisive moment'. This is the split second when an image becomes complete in its composition - when each element of the image is in balance, in context and essential to the scene. This is when the shutter is released and the moment is captured forever.

In her exuberant and explosive pictures, Lois Greenfield captures not just the lithe and acrobatic forms of dancers performing their art, but the purity and exhilaration of movement itself. Without tricks or manipulation of any kind, she catches fleeting and impossible moments in a style that is both lyrical and graphic. Greenfield has been compared with Eadweard Muybridge for his exploration of human locomotion and with Henri Cartier-Bresson for capturing the decisive moment. Unlike her predecessors however, her images depict but don’t refer to the “real” world. They are documents of her imagination.

Beginning her career as a photojournalist, Greenfield covered the experimental dance movement scene for the Village Voice from 1973 to the mid 90’s. In 1982 she decided to open her own studio where she could control the lighting, and work with dancers in a collaborative environment.

Her exploration of the expressive possibilities of photographed movement and her unique approach to photographing the human form in motion has radically redefined the genre and influenced a generation of photographers.

Greenfield has created signature images for countless contemporary dance companies as well as commercial clients.  Her photographs have been featured in many magazines worldwide and exhibited internationally. She frequently gives lectures and offers workshops.

Since 2014 Greenfield has been an Artist in Residence at NYU/Tisch Department of Dance and New Media. In 2015, She was honored with the Dance in Focus award in recognition of her ground-breaking contributions to the field. Her third book, “Lois Greenfield:Moving Still”, (Thames & Hudson, UK & Chronicle Books, USA) will be released in Fall 2015.

Take Kayo is a Vancouver based street photographer and camera reviewer. Starting his career in photography as a weekend warrior wedding, commercial and sports photographer in the mid 1990's, Take worked for Kodak-Phototrader from 1996 to 2005. During that time he worked with all the local commercial labs and professional photographers in town and understood the 'business' of photography... and wasn't happy.

Leaving the photo industry, Take spent the next 5 years figuring out how to re-introduce photography back into his career along a path that was different than most of his fellow photographers. Starting his Bigheadtaco blog as an experiment in 2010, he continued posting pictures and eventually incorporating camera reviews.

He currently works closely with Fujifilm Canada, Leica North America, and Ricoh Imaging Canada. Take discovered Instagram in 2013 and considers his Instagram photography his primary portfolio, using mostly his iPhone camera. In 2014 Take started his own YouTube channel with his wife Camera Girl as his videographer. In 2015 Take added a producer to the team, and the rest is history.

A great street portrait is more than just a photograph of a stranger. In many ways that person being photographed and the photographer enter a collaboration. The subject is choosing to open themselves to being revealed and interpreted by the photographer. And the photographer, if he’s adept enough, is communicating what they find fascinating and beautiful about that subject. And in the hands of a really good photographer, they reveal something about the community and the culture they exist in.

Shawn Theodore is just such a photographer. Known as @_xST on Instagram, the photographer who calls Philadelphia home has been creating a remarkable series of portraits largely of African American men and women of various generations against the colorful backdrops that exist in rapidly changing urban communities. His work is as much a chronicler of a people at a specific time as it is a bold statement of what it means to be black, to be beautiful and be visible.

We all live such ordinary lives. We get up each morning, take a shower, brush our teeth, get ready for work or get the kids ready for school. We go through each day in activities that are very similar to the ones that we’ve done the day before and the day before that, making the time seem like some kind of homogenous blur. We don’t think of those moments as being especially interesting or even memorable.

Yet, in the hands of the right photographer those very same moments can be fodder for something interesting, beautiful and even poignant. Moments that are both familiar and ordinary can take on a quality that reveals something about ourselves and each other that we often miss in the blur that is our lives.

Photographer, Susan Rosenberg Jones is a photographer who is able to do that, whether she is photographing her neighbors in her New York apartment complex or her husband during the private and intimate moments of their lives together. Susan demonstrates that there is nothing that is too ordinary or undeserving of our attention, when it is observed with curiosity, respect and love.

Once you’ve made the decision to practice photography and after you’ve made the investment in a camera and software, well, that’s when the real challenge begins. The questions becomes how you get from being yet another guy or gal with a camera to one that actually produces work that is unique, beautiful and hopefully personal.

Yet, as difficult and challenging as that might be, we see examples of ordinary people make work that stuns and inspires, using the vary same tools that we readily have access to. Jaime Ibarra is one such photographer.

Jaime Ibarra is a self-taught photographer whose creative life began as a musician, then a graphic designer and eventually a photographer. But even though photography came later in his life, he used the skills he he had developed teaching himself music to teach himself how to do extraordinary things with a one camera, one lens and Photoshop.

There are different stories about what leads a person to pick up a camera to do more than just making snapshots. Some of these stories begin high school course, or when they have their first child or when they look at somebody else’s work and think to themselves, “I could do that”.

For this week’s guest Michelle Rick, her decision to begin practicing photography came from frustrations with another art form, writing. She had always considered herself a storyteller and had earned an MFA in creative writing at the New School, but when she struggled to make the transition for writing short stories to a novel, she struggled. She soon found an outlet for frustration and anxiety with a camera.  Within a short time, she found herself exploring her creativity on the streets of New York.

Within a short period of time, she has become adept at using light, color and the theater of the street to make beautiful photographs of the city that she loves. She is continually challenging herself, not satisfied to merely produce images that look pleasing, but that reveal something of herself.

The beauty of the landscape is experienced in a unique and beautiful way when it is captured as a black and white photograph. Without the presence of color, the natural world is revealed using a very personal point of view, that of the photographer.. Shades of gray reveal the subtle nuances that are not immediately obvious when we see the world in full color.

Photographer Gary Wagner began exploring this world on film using a large-format camera and chemistry, but he has embraced the flexibility and control that digital provides, especially with his black and white imagery.

In his new book Digital Black and White Landscape Photography: Fine Art Techniques from Camera to Print, Gary shares how he sees a scene, captures it with his camera and uses post-processing to complete his vision.

The last nine years of producing The Candid Frame have included hundreds of special and memorable conversations with great photographers. It’s also provided me not only unique insight into what it means to pursue one’s passion for making photographs, but also what it means to make the choice to lead a creative life.

So, when my friend and fellow-photographer Bill Wadman posed the question as to what I’ve learned from all these conversations, we thought it a good idea to record our discussion and share it with you.

Bill Wadman is the cohost along with Jeffery Saddoris of On Taking Pictures, a weekly podcast that examines many of the idea and themes that we touch on The Candid Frame. I highly recommend their show. Check it out. I think you’ll like what you hear.

When it comes to portraits, people who are being their unique selves can result in the best photographs. In a world where digitally enhanced versions of ourselves are displayed everywhere, it’s refreshing to see images where real people are themselves. It’s made all the better when people who take pride in their uniqueness present themselves in front of the photographer’s lens.

Muir Vidler is a editorial/commercial photographer who makes the most of such opportunities in all of his work. You can see it showcased especially well in his project, Rebels Without a Pause where he photographs some of Britain’s aging rebels and Mavericks.

Vidler’s work possesses its own uniques by adeptly using color and setting to produce wonderful photographs. He is also a great example of a photographer who allows his curiosity to inspire his photography.

The culture of the Mississippi Delta is a wealthy one. Just as its land has been a rich source for cotton and soybean, the people of the Delta have been ripe for stories, both written and visual. Whether it’s William Faulkner with a typewriter or William Eggleston with his camera, each artist has proven the Delta as an endless source of inspiration. It’s a place that has lured many a photographer.

But it’s a place filled with contradictions. As rich as it is for the creative artist, the existence of poverty, economic disparity and the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow is not far behind. It makes it hard to idealize or demonize a place and its people. To know the place, you have to go deeper.

And that is what photographer, Magdalena Sole does in her book, New Delta Rising. It’s beautiful, stunning photographs provide an insightful view of the Delta, both good and bad. But most importantly, it allows the people in her images to tell their own stories in a collection of essays that compliments the photographs. If a book that reveal the soul of a place, this one is it.

TCF Ep. 284 - Matt Sweeney

Hollywood is a town that has been defined more by its myths than its realities. It's a town built on fiction and endless aspirations.

So, photographs that are free from the influence of publicists and marketing teams can seem jarring and surprising. But that can be a good thing.

That's what Matt Sweeney's photographs do. They show an unexpected and beautiful side of Hollywood in the early eighties, where the 1-mile stretch between Hollywood and Vine and Hollywood and Highland was a setting of public theater with every kind of character, both big and small.

Taken during his early twenties using a Nikon SLR with Kodachrome film, his images of Los Angeles capture a unique time in a way that's rare and wonderful.

Born in 1974, Matt Stuart was raised in the leafy suburbs of Harrow, North West London. He admits to a less than distinguished school career, but was called upon aged 11 to play a trumpet solo in front of the Queen Mother. Her Majesty’s reaction is not recorded.

A little later, in 1986, Matt discovered skateboarding after watching the film “Back to the Future”. Skating occupied his every waking moment until 1994, when he looked up from the half-pipe and noticed that girls had got a lot more interesting. He also indulged in a brief, ill-advised affair with Kung Fu.

Matt’s father, keenly aware that his son would never be the next Bruce Lee, introduced him to photography, handing over books by Robert Frank & Henri Cartier-Bresson. Ever since then, photography has been Matt’s overriding passion, although he’s still quite interested in skateboards and girls. (But thankfully not Kung Fu).

TCF Ep. 265 - Kale Friesen

Kale Friesen was born into the expansive vistas of Saskatchewan in 1981. At a very young age Kale became immersed in art and knew that he was destined to work in the arts. Kale spent his entire youth painting, drawing and playing music, and it wasn’t until he discovered photography that Kale understood how best he could realize his aesthetic vision.

In 2001 Kale headed west to Vancouver BC where he continued my love of arts, music and skateboarding.

A hunger to see the world and be inspired, Kale moved to Paris, France in 2006 to focus on his artistic pursuits. After visiting the Fondation Cartier-Bresson on a summer afternoon in 2007 he knew in that instant that the only thing he wanted to do was make photographs. The people and architecture of Paris became Kale’s photography school.

While in living in Europe Kale began shooting on the streets of Paris every day and traveling to abandoned spaces in France and Belgium, experimenting with Fine Art photography and street photography.

After returning to Vancouver in 2009 Kale changed direction and photographic focus on fashion photography and portraiture. The genius and originality of photographers of Helmut Newton, Nick Knight and Solve Sundsbo opened Kale’s mind and guided his path towards becoming a fashion photographer.

Kale photographs emote a somber mood with a strong sense of colour, design and movement.

Kale currently lives and works in Vancouver, BC as a fashion, beauty photographer, and still carries a camera every day.

TCF Ep. 262 - Nancy Lehrer

Nancy Lehrer sets out to capture daily life and interactions. These life events are sometimes celebratory but more often commonplace. They are made up of simple conversations and actions – calling out from a balcony, telling a secret, praying, or just engaging with the neighbors on a warm afternoon. She is an observer, seeking to find and record a bit of culture and community.

Nancy Lehrer has been using photography to capture her unique world-view for most of her life. Her earliest photojournalist recognition came at a summer camp at the young age of 10 where, armed with her father’s Kodak Brownie camera, she earned the position of camp-photographer documenting the summer’s activities. Although she holds Masters degrees in Music and Computer Science, she has always held on to her passion for photography. She has studied photography from several American photography masters including Jay Maisel, Sam Abell, and Gerd Ludwig. She has received several local awards and lectures on photography in the Ventura County area.

TCF Ep. 255 - Hugo Passarello Luna

Hugo Passarello Luna is a photographer and a multimedia journalist. His "Unexpected Photo Essay on Cortazar, his readers and Paris" was exhibited in several locations in Paris and was mentioned by media all over Latin America. The story is a series of portraits taken in Paris of friends and readers of Argentine writer, Jorge Cortazar. The project seeks to create a hopscotch of images that weaves together the personal stories of participants with Cortazar and Paris.

Each of the participants had to choose a passage of the book Hopscotch that mentions a place in Paris. Passarello then photographed them in the chosen site and asked them to briefly explain why they preferred it over others.

He transforms the traditional photo essay into a participative and playful project, where the people portrayed and the audience get to write and rewrite the story by playing around with the images.

TCF Ep. 240 - Zun Lee

Zun Lee a self-taught photographer who picked up a camera in 2009. He has been an artist and storyteller since he was little but then life got in the way. Making pictures is his way of reclaiming his artistic side.

He is the quintessential nomad. He was born and raised in Germany, has lived in various parts of the USA and is currently based in Toronto, Canada.

That sense of wanderlust, of being uprooted, has never left him. He doesn't anchor his concept of “home” to a familiar physical space – home is a state of mind I enter wherever he's inspired to create the work he wants, or when he's surrounded by people he cares about.

As a clinician, he is trained to work with people at their most vulnerable who grant him permission to invade their privacy. As a result, he has always had an intense interest in the dynamics of trust and control when it comes to that interaction. At best, it can reveal a unique connection, a kind of truth that would otherwise not be foregrounded.

When a human being connects with another and - even if for a split second - relinquishes a certain level of control, it is fascinating that complete strangers can share an alternate truth about themselves that was hidden not only to others, but perhaps even to themselves. It is in these moments that individual emotion transcends the personal realm and gains universally understood context.

As a photographer, these are the moments he is after. Stories of connection that reveal themselves in a single glance or over a period of years.
